Mom camp: when a large group of area moms (friends and friends of friends) and all their kids take over unsuspecting venues each day for a week during the summer. To mix it up, I've added an award to each event.
Day 1: Best repeat venue: Cunningham Falls & Lake
This place never disappoints. Scenic, beachy, boats for rent, snackbar and perfectly acceptable bathroom/shower, etc. nearby. For the really adventurous there's a hike to a waterfall too (this was the category we were in LAST year...this year we were in the "look, I have two busy-bodies to keep track of and a third new(ish) baby...we're lucky we made it here at all...now we're leaving" category).
Day 2: Best new spot - ClimbZone in Laurel, MD
This place was a huge hit, especially on a 100+ degree day. It's got AC, it wasn't crowded, the kids are taught how to climb on their own (meaning, very little work on my part) and there are bounce houses for when kids need a change of pace. Check, check, check and check.
Day 3: Best fruit to pick during summer: blueberries at Butler's Orchard
Unlike several other fruits I know, blueberry picking = easy labor with big rewards, especially when you're kids are doing all the labor. No crouching down, no climbing ladders, and it happened to be an unseasonably much less warm day. Add in a "hay" ride and hours of free play on the expansive grounds...success. Ding.
Day 4: Best place to chill and chat up the ladies - Neighborhood pool.
What more is there to say?
Day 5: Best location for an outdoor kids music show - Theater in the Woods, Wolftrap
Sure, the show was pushing it a little for Jacob & Owen, but the location itself is cool. Tucked away in the ...woods...surrounded by trees and shade. And watching as the older kids begin to self-determine whether they are too old or still young enough to dance in public is a show in itself.
